5 Alternative Trekking Adventures in Myanmar

When it comes to the idea of where to place your trekking adventures in Myanmar, many think of Kalaw for its scenic trek routes. However, Myanmar has more to offer. From awe-inspiring mountains of Putao to the remote hamlets of Chin states, these alternative trekking adventures provides you more choices :

Hsipaw

Located in Shan State, Hsipaw offers a very different experience than Kalaw. Beside the picturesque landscapes, adventurers are to have chance to get face to face to Anisakan waterfall, historic Shan palace. It is not mention that you will cross by the hill station of Maymyo where there is a wide array of British colonial architect.

chin state

Chin State

The main reasons why Chin State is luring does not only come from its rugged, mystical mountains but mainly from its friendly hill tribes. The area treasures stunning photogenic chances, specially the capture of Chin hill tribes who had long tradition of tattooing their faces.
The trekking way is full of rice paddies, primitive forest and opportunities to encounter wild animals.

lashio

Lashio

It has been just few years that Lashio becomes a hotspot on the travel map of Myanmar. This less-visited destination is really eye-catching for those who are eager to know Burmese rural life as well its unspoiled nature.
Adventures vary beautifully from 2 days trek with waterfall plunging to 4 days combining dirt bike, standing paddling and trek through untouched jungles.

pyin oo lwin

Pyin Oo Lwin

On any travel guide book, Pyin Oo Lwin is defined as one of the best places to travel back to the past, a wonderful town studded by a big number of British heritages. Its surrounding on the other hand, will amaze any trekkers who want to conquer unspoiled river valleys, hidden mountains.
To enjoy a trek in Pyin Oo Lwin you need to find a very good local tour guide and prepare to sleep by the riverside with a touch !

Putao

Undoubtedly, Putao is the best trekking site in Burma. It is located in the far north region, under the hill of Himalaya range. This means there are different terrains, various routes to choose.
Putao is also home to Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak of Myanmar lying on the elevation of 5.881m. Any trip to Putao must be well prepared in advance, especially if you are about to climb the high mountains.

Some of my tips for trekking in Myanmar

What to where ?
– In general, Myanmar has tropical weather. Hence, you should pack light with comfortable shirts and trousers. If your travel is in summer which is monsoon time, remember to bring a pair of boost.
– Putao and Chin State have European-like weather so take more warm clothes.
– Bring suncream, anti-mosquito spray
– Do not forget your own dental kits.

Homestay conditions
When your trek involves in homestay, bear in mind that the condition is very basic. You will be provided mattress, mosquito net, pillow and blanket but no more than that.
Do not expect modern toilet, instead it will be just clean.
Do not drink tap water, it is not good enough. Buy more bottled waters before you start trekking.
